Here is a quick rundown on how to get a blog up and running in no time. You will need 1) a domain name, 2) a company to host your website, 3) some way to design and build your site, and 4) ways for people to find your website.
Domain and Hosting
I recommend using Bluehost to purchase your domain and to provide your web hosting. If you sign up for three years, the company will give you a nice break. Bluehost offers three levels, and I have the middle (Plus) option. It allows for me to host an unlimited number of domains.
This has been extremely beneficial for me because my wife and I have six websites. I happen to be a magician (been doing it since I was a kid and people tell me I am pretty good at it), so one site is for my magic business (you can visit the site here). Another, I started when I was a journalist, and it is mostly dormant now. I use it as a testing grounds for sites I am developing for friends. My wife, Wendi, blogs about food, travel and fun things to do. You can read here blog here. I have another site for my search engine optimization business (the link appears below). Plus, some other sites in various stages of development.
The domain is your address. You can purchase it from other vendors (I purchased a couple from Google Domains), but for me it has been best to just work through Bluehost so everything is seamless. If you purchase more than one domain, Bluehost has traditionally offered discounts on the subsequent ones.

Build Your Website with WordPress
More than one-quarter of all websites are built on WordPress. It is open source software, so people are constantly writing plugins to improve operability. WordPress offers people like me who basically have no coding skills (I have a limited understanding of HTML) the ability to design beautiful sites with a little effort. WordPress is sort of like the foundation of your site, and on top of it you add WordPress themes, which give your site different looks and feels.
There are a number of free themes available. Take your time and do some research as to what you want. My wife’s site uses a free theme. It does everything she needs for her blog.
How to install WordPress
This is from Bluehost:
If you would like to get started but don’t have an account you can sign up for one at BlueHost.com
We provide a program which makes it very easy to install third party scripts to your hosting account. If you want your website to have a WordPress blog, you can use Marketplace to install WordPress to the root of your site or to a subdirectory.
>> Step 2: Install WordPress
Installing WordPress with Marketplace
- Log in to your Bluehost cPanel account.
- Find the Website section and select Install WordPress.

- If necessary, you can edit the email address, username and password for the new WordPress installation. Click “advanced options” and you can change those settings.
- Read through the license and service agreements and check the boxes.

Employ Search Engine Optimization Strategies
Search Engine Optimization, affectionately known as SEO, is a series of strategies, tactics and tools to help your website and its pages rank higher organically in search engine results.
There are a number of free resources on the web you can tap into. We recommend the Yoast SEO plugin for your WordPress site. This will help optimize each of your pages, but SEO takes effort. I say it is a commitment to doing things right every single time. I do SEO for a living, and I can honestly say it is time-consuming. But, it is worth the effort. (I charge clients good money for this service.)
When people are just starting out, they might not have the funds to have someone like myself conduct an SEO audit, which is an in-depth review of an entire website to see where it meets best practices, where it needs some help and what needs drastic changes now.
